Fairy Pools are situated on Isle of Sky and are on my favourite “must see places” in Scotland. The route to the Fairy Pools is filled with amazing views, massive mountain and water formations.

Although the photos are not really showing their size, the mountains you can see on the photos are truly enormous. These beautiful mountains somewhat emanate with some energy attracting people like a magnet. It is hard to stop starring at them and easy to lose yourself in the view, you will feel almost hypnotised with their beauty. For this reason we hiked much further than the point where everyone else stopped and turned around.

A long trek

We wanted to get a better look and so we’ve chosen a big rift in the middle one of a mountain (visible on the photo below) as our destination and begun walking. It took us over an hour and 30 minutes to get there. When we finally reached our destination, we have quickly realised that the rift or crack in the mountain is actually a huge cave. It’s a real shame we did not have our climbing equipment with us because it looked really interesting inside but also very dangerous. After a short rest on the mountainside, we begun walking back. The point we reached was very far away from any trodden lanes and so we had to get to some sort of stable ground before we could just walk back to the car and so we picked the shortest possible route which unfortunately ended up being quite a difficult one due to all the little streams and soaked soil.

The legend

In order to find out more about the name of this beautiful place, we have asked some locals to tell us what they know about it and according to them, the legend states, that long time ago, a group of ‘mountain fairies’ used to live in these caves. At night, they would rest in the pools and wash in waterfalls after days spent on playing tricks on local farmers and shepherds. Apparently the fairies love to hide little items so people can’t find them and then when we lose patience they would return it in a really obvious place – sounds familiar? I’m sure each of you had been in this kind of situation before? It happens to me every time I’m looking for my car keys 🙂

Overall , visiting Fairy Pools was an amazing experience and I wish to repeat it as soon as possible with one difference… Next time we are going to clime these majestic mountains! There is so much more to discover on Isle of Skye!

Goal achieved! After almost two hours of walking we have reached the mountain. Very high and steep but the views are breathtaking!
